If you're trying to grow a live stream on TikTok, there's a good chance you're posting wrong — or not posting at all. In this week's LC Coalition town hall, we broke down one of the most important and most overlooked growth levers available to any TikTok LIVE creator: posting with intention before you go live. It's free, it's simple, and done right it can transform your live stream numbers. Here's the full breakdown.
Posting and Going Live Are Symbiotic
The single biggest mistake creators make is treating their posts and their live streams as two separate things. They're not. Growing your account through posting and growing your live stream feed each other. Use your posts to leverage your live, and use your live to grow the following for your posts. When you treat them as one connected system instead of two separate jobs, both start to climb together.
The baseline rule is non-negotiable: post something before you go live. If you're not posting at all, start with the simplest version possible — a five-second clip that says "I'm Pete and I'm going live." Send it. There is no excuse to post nothing. If you're going live in one to two hours, you should have a post out.
Why TikTok Says Post Two Hours Before You Go Live
This isn't a gimmick some internet guru invented. It's direct guidance from TikTok. The recommendation is to post roughly two hours before you go live. Here's why it works: when you publish a post, the people it reaches will see it while your profile shows that little red "LIVE" ring lit up. Even if a post only reaches 200 people, that's 200 people who now know you're live — and some of them will click in. If the video performs well, that boost can carry straight into your live stream that night.
Posting Is Also Its Own Income Stream
Once your account passes 10,000 followers and you're in the Creator Rewards program, posting can pay you directly. It might only be a few dollars per video, but if you post every single day, it adds up. A consistent base of even $500 a month from posts is real, life-changing money — and it's just one of the many income streams a serious live creator should be building. The mindset shift is to treat posting as both a growth engine and a revenue bucket.
Quality, Purpose, and a Real Call to Action
Once you're posting consistently, the next step is making those posts better. Three things matter most. First, quality: a ten-dollar lapel mic, better lighting, and a clean camera image all raise the floor on every video you make. Second, purpose: all content either educates or entertains. If your post does neither, it won't earn the viewership that feeds your live. Third — and most overlooked — a real call to action. Do the people who see your posts actually know you go live? If you're just posting gameplay clips with no mention of your stream, they have no way of knowing. Pin a comment that says you're live every night. Put it in the description. Put it on screen. Tell people.
Special Events and Lead-Up Anticipation
The real meat of growth is building anticipation around special events. A recent example: instead of simply announcing a new game, Pete ran a seven-day series of intentionally vague clue videos building toward a reveal date. None of the individual clips went viral — and that was fine. The core audience showed up on reveal day because they had to know what was going on. That's the power of a lead-up.
You can apply this to anything. If you run live battles, hype them in advance — stakes, rivalries, viewer votes on the punishment or the skin you'll use. Build a themed series leading into a gift-specific battle. Or invent an event out of thin air: a new game, a solo night, fixing your car live with funny five-second teaser clips throughout the day. The event doesn't have to be magic. Your genuine energy around it is what makes people care.
Don't Overlook Viewer Shout-Outs
One of the most underrated moves is the viewer shout-out. If someone gives you a big gift, interacts regularly, or is simply part of your community, take a couple of minutes to thank them in a video. Tag them, highlight them, give them a permanent spot in your content history. Do it because you genuinely appreciate them — not to fish for more gifts. When it's authentic, people watching will want to be part of that community, and the community finds you.
The Bottom Line
Step one: make sure you post. Step two: be intentional about when and how you post so it benefits your live. Step three: be intentional about what you post — high quality, with a purpose and a clear call to action. Posting and going live aren't two jobs. They're one growth system that compounds.
