Every week, a live creator comes to me convinced that TikTok is out to get them. “You can’t say Twitch.” “You can’t mention your Discord.” “TikTok is hiding my Live.” I get it — the live space is full of rumors passed around like gospel. The problem is that most of them are wrong, and believing them keeps you playing small. So let’s bust five of the most common ones.
Myth 1: You can’t say “Twitch” on TikTok Live
You can say Twitch. You can say Kick, YouTube, whatever. TikTok’s AI moderation isn’t dumb — the “purple app” code names aren’t fooling anyone, and you don’t need them. What actually matters is intent. If the whole point of your Live is pushing people off TikTok — logo on screen, “don’t watch here, go to my Twitch” — that’s a problem. Mentioning it as a bonus? Totally fine.
Myth 2: You can’t promote your Discord
Same rule. Your Discord is an asset — it’s where you pull your community together. TikTok Live Studio literally has built-in Discord integration for roles and links. Promote it. Just don’t make driving people to it the entire point of your stream. Build community; don’t run an exit ramp.
Myth 3: You can’t switch games or topics
This one might be the most limiting. You will not “break your algorithm” by trying something new. TikTok judges each Live on its own merits that day. I’ve heard this straight from TikTok in meetings: take chances, experiment, find what works. When something works, run it — then try the next thing. The box you feel stuck in is one you built.
Myth 4: Nobody comes to my Live because I have low viewers
Unless you’re FYP restricted (a real, solvable thing we cover inside LC Coalition), TikTok is pushing your Live out. Go look at yesterday’s analytics — you probably had hundreds of people see it. The real question is your average watch time. If it’s low, they swiped in and swiped right back out. That’s not distribution; that’s retention. You’re competing against everything on the internet, so give people a reason to stay.
Myth 5: You can’t ask for gifts
You can talk about gifts, set live goals, and run gift-based campaigns and events. What you can’t do is beg, panhandle, or make gifting the entire point with no real interaction happening. TikTok’s gifting rules are strict on begging and fake sob stories — stay on the right side of that line and you’re fine.
The through-line
Every one of these comes back to the same principle: TikTok wants attention kept on TikTok. Anything that’s a bonus or a side quest is allowed. The moment it becomes the whole point, that’s when you get flagged. Learn the rules, play the game, and stop letting rumors shrink your Live.
